Trabzonspor have rejected head coach Fatih Tekke’s resignation following the Turkish club’s heavy Europa League defeat by Ferencvaros.
The Super Lig side were eliminated from the competition after suffering a 4-0 defeat in Hungary on Thursday. A scoreline that meant losing the play-off tie 5-0 on aggregate.
Tekke, 48, tendered his resignation shortly after the defeat, having guided Trabzonspor to a third-place finish in the Turkish top flight last season. However, the club rejected his resignation on Friday, saying the decision was influenced by the “intense emotional impact” of the Europa League elimination.
Trabzonspor said the manager’s resignation was made in the immediate aftermath of the disappointing result and confirmed that Tekke would remain in charge.
Trabzonspor Drop Into Conference League
The Europa League exit means Trabzonspor will compete in the Europa Conference League this season. The seven-time Turkish champions are due to discover their six league-phase opponents on Friday.
Despite the European setback, the club have made several high-profile additions during the summer transfer window. An indication of the club’s desire to challenge domestically and in Europe.
The signings have raised expectations around Trabzonspor. However, their early Europa League elimination has provided a major setback.
For now, however, the club have opted to stand behind Tekke rather than accept his resignation.
