How Nigerians can apply for FG's laptop, smartphone credit scheme

The Federal Government has opened applications for its new consumer credit scheme, giving Nigerians an opportunity to purchase laptops, smartphones, tablets and other digital devices through flexible payment plans.

The initiative, known as the Credit for Laptops, Internet, Connectivity and Knowledge Digital Devices (C.L.I.C.K.D.) Programme, is being implemented by the Nigerian Consumer Credit Corporation (CREDICORP) in partnership with the Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy.

The Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr Bosun Tijani, unveiled the programme on Tuesday in Abuja alongside the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of CREDICORP, Uzoma Nwagba.

According to the Federal Government, the initiative will allow Nigerians to spread the cost of purchasing digital devices instead of paying the full amount upfront. The programme will also prioritise locally assembled laptops as part of efforts to support local manufacturing.

How to apply

Interested applicants can apply through the official C.L.I.C.K.D. portal by following these steps:

First, visit the official website at credicorp.ng/clickd.

Next, click the “I’m Interested” button to access the application form.

Applicants will then provide details such as their state of residence and employment status. Available categories include salary earners, freelancers, self-employed persons, business owners, students, job seekers and NYSC members.

Applicants may also indicate their monthly income, although the form lists this section as optional. The available income brackets range from below ₦100,000 to above ₦1 million.

In addition, applicants should indicate whether they belong to a digital talent programme. The available options include 3MTT, Andela Learning Community, Learn2Earn, ALX Africa, HNG Internship, AltSchool Africa, Genesys Tech Hub and “Other.”

Applicants must also select the device they need. The available options include laptops, smartphones, tablets and other digital devices.

Furthermore, applicants should state why they need the device. They can choose one or more reasons, including learning and professional certifications, remote work, freelancing, business growth, school activities, software development and content creation.

The application form also asks applicants how they heard about the programme. Options include 3MTT, social media, Google search, schools, employers, friends, family members and other sources.

Before submitting the application, applicants must confirm that the information they provided is accurate. They must also agree to be contacted about their application and consent to CREDICORP and its partners using their information to assess their eligibility.

Who qualifies for the scheme?

For now, the Federal Government has limited the first phase of the programme to fellows of the Three Million Technical Talent (3MTT) Programme.

According to Nwagba, the pilot phase covers 1,000 laptops. The rollout began in Abuja, where 77 beneficiaries received their devices. CREDICORP will distribute the remaining laptops to qualified 3MTT fellows in other states in phases.

However, the application form includes several other digital talent programmes. These include Andela Learning Community, Learn2Earn, ALX Africa, HNG Internship, AltSchool Africa and Genesys Tech Hub.

Although this suggests participants from those programmes may also submit applications, CREDICORP has so far publicly confirmed only 3MTT fellows as beneficiaries of the current 1,000-laptop pilot.

Loan terms yet to be announced

CREDICORP has not disclosed key details of the loan package.

The corporation has yet to announce the interest rate, repayment period or down-payment structure for the C.L.I.C.K.D. loans.

However, the agency’s phased rollout follows the approach it adopted for its main consumer credit scheme, which launched in April 2024. That programme initially targeted federal civil servants before expanding to more Nigerians.
