Meanwhile, Tinubu’s long stay in Europe has drawn public attention. The President left Nigeria on August 30 for a three-week working vacation in London.
He later travelled to Paris, where he met French President Emmanuel Macron and businessman Vincent Bolloré. The Presidency extended his stay twice before announcing his return to Lagos on Tuesday, September 29.
Opposition Questions Tinubu’s UNGA Absence
Tinubu’s absence from the 81st United Nations General Assembly also sparked criticism. Opposition groups questioned his decision to skip the annual gathering for the third straight year.
Vice-President Kashim Shettima represented Nigeria at the UN meeting. He also delivered the country’s national statement.
However, the Presidency said Tinubu’s absence would not weaken Nigeria’s diplomatic role or influence in Africa.
