The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has warned Nigerians against a fake online publication claiming to announce governorship candidates in six states, urging the public to disregard the information.
In a statement, the electoral body identified Zamfara, Gombe, Delta, Plateau, Yobe and Kano as the states mentioned in the fraudulent publication. INEC said the purported announcement did not originate from the commission and could mislead voters and other members of the public.
“The Commission wishes to categorically inform the general public that the publication is FAKE and did not originate from INEC,” the statement read.
The commission also dismissed claims that it had issued a special announcement concerning governorship candidates in the six states.
“The Commission further wishes to clarify that any information suggesting that INEC has issued a special announcement concerning governorship candidates in the aforementioned states is false,” it added.
INEC urged Nigerians to avoid sharing the publication and to verify electoral information through its official communication channels. The commission listed its official website as inecnigeria.org and identified its verified social media accounts as @inecnigeria on X and Instagram, and INEC Nigeria on Facebook. It also directed the public to its news portal, inecnews.com.
The electoral body reiterated its commitment to providing accurate and reliable information about electoral activities. It cautioned the public against relying on unverified online publications, stressing the importance of checking official sources before sharing information about candidates and election-related announcements.
