Instagram Ends End-to-End Encrypted Direct Messages

Instagram Removes Encrypted Messaging Feature

Instagram has officially stopped supporting end-to-end encrypted direct messages.

The platform confirmed the change in an update published on its Help page, stating that the feature ended on May 8, 2026.

Instagram informed users that encrypted chats would no longer function on the app from Friday.

Users Asked to Download Chats and Media

The company advised users with affected conversations to save important messages and media files.

According to Instagram, users will receive instructions on how to download content they wish to keep before losing access to encrypted chats.

The platform also noted that some users may need to update their app to use the download option.

How End-to-End Encryption Worked

End-to-end encryption allowed only the sender and receiver to access messages and calls.

The system used special security keys stored on users’ devices to protect conversations from third-party access.

Instagram explained that messages became locked once sent and could only open on devices linked to the chat.

The company said the same protection covered voice and video calls.

Privacy Concerns Grow Online

Instagram stated that even its parent company, Meta Platforms, could not access encrypted conversations under the system.

However, users could still share content by reporting messages or forwarding them outside encrypted chats.

The decision has sparked debates about online privacy and data security as social media platforms continue adjusting moderation and communication policies.

Meta did not provide additional details on why it discontinued the feature.
