Iran has launched ballistic missile attacks on US military bases in Iraq and Jordan. This comes after American forces struck targets across Iran on Tuesday, killing four people when shrapnel from a missile hit a home where a wedding celebration was underway in the southern Iranian town of Sirik.
The Iranian Red Crescent confirmed the deaths at Sirik, adding that more than fifty people were injured. US Central Command said its strikes on Iran followed what it described as “recent attempted attacks” by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps against commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz.
US Navy Captain Tim Hawkins told the BBC the military was aware of the reports from Sirik, adding:
“The US military never targets civilians, unlike the IRGC.”
Iran Responds
Iran responded before dawn on Wednesday. The IRGC launched a barrage of ballistic missiles at a US Marine base in Aqaba, Jordan, according to Iran’s semi-official Tasnim news agency. The Jordanian Armed Forces confirmed it intercepted thirteen missiles, destroying ten, while three fell in remote areas with no casualties. Kuwait activated its air defences in response to Iranian missile activity. Explosions were also reported in Bahrain following Iranian attacks, according to Iranian state media.
Iranian state media reported that US strikes had hit Chabahar, Konarak, an airport in Jiroft, and that explosions were heard on Qeshm Island and in Bandar Abbas. The IRGC said the US would “regret” the strikes.
Trump, when the US strikes were announced on Tuesday, issued a direct warning. Iran would be hit again at “a much harder and higher level” if it retaliated. Regardless, Iran has retaliated.
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian offered a sliver of diplomatic language amid the missiles. Further saying through state media that if the US returned to honouring the agreement, Iran would reciprocate.
