12 killed, nine injured in mass shooting in Johannesburg

Police have launched a manhunt after gunmen opened fire in a Johannesburg informal settlement, leaving 12 people dead.

At least 12 people were killed and nine others injured in a mass shooting in the Cleveland area of Johannesburg, according to South African police.

Police said more than 10 armed suspects arrived in a white Toyota Quantum late on Tuesday night. The attackers allegedly entered the informal settlement through different access points and opened fire on residents at several locations before fleeing the scene.

Authorities confirmed that eight men and three women died at the scene, while another victim later died in hospital. The injured were taken to medical facilities for treatment.

The motive for the attack remains unknown, and investigators have launched a large-scale manhunt to track down those responsible.

South Africa continues to struggle with high levels of violent crime and one of the world’s highest murder rates. Mass shootings in informal settlements are often linked to gang activity, criminal disputes or local conflicts.

Police say investigations are ongoing as security agencies work to identify and arrest the suspects behind the deadly attack.
