Keir Starmer condemns sentences in teenage rape case

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer says the sentencing of three boys convicted of raping two teenage girls must be reviewed.

Keir Starmer has described as “appalling” a court decision that spared three teenage boys from custody after they were convicted of raping two girls in Hampshire.

The boys, aged between 13 and 15 at the time of the attacks, were sentenced at to Youth Rehabilitation. The assaults happened in Fordingbridge in late 2024 and early 2025.

One victim told the BBC the ruling felt like “a rock straight in my face” and said the punishment amounted to a “slap on the wrist”. The boys filmed the attacks and shared some of the footage online.

Starmer said the victims had shown “extraordinary bravery and strength in heinous circumstances”. He also confirmed that the case is being urgently reviewed by the attorney general. The Court of Appeal could now reconsider the sentences.

The case has sparked widespread political backlash and renewed debate across the UK.
