Norway’s royal family has gathered at the bedside of King Harald V after the country’s 89-year-old monarch was reported to be in an “extremely serious” condition in hospital.
King Harald has been receiving treatment at Oslo University Hospital for more than a week after being diagnosed with haemolytic anaemia. This is a rare blood disorder that causes the destruction or reduction of red blood cells.
His wife, Queen Sonja, and his son and heir, Crown Prince Haakon, have cancelled their scheduled royal engagements and joined other members of the family at the hospital.
The Norwegian royal household confirmed the seriousness of the King’s condition but did not provide further details about his prognosis.
Royal Family Rushes to Hospital
Members of the Norwegian royal family were seen arriving at Oslo University Hospital on Thursday morning. Among those present was Crown Princess Mette-Marit, the wife of Crown Prince Haakon. King Harald’s sister, Princess Astrid, was also reported to have travelled to the hospital.
Crown Prince Haakon, 53, has been acting as regent while his father is on leave from his royal duties. Harald has been King of Norway since 1991 and is currently Europe’s oldest reigning head of state.
King Harald’s Health Problems
The King’s latest health crisis follows several health problems in recent years that have increasingly affected his ability to carry out official duties.
He has been receiving cortisone treatment for haemolytic anaemia. The condition occurs when red blood cells are destroyed faster than the body can replace them and can result in symptoms including fatigue and shortness of breath.
In 2024, Harald was fitted with a pacemaker after falling ill while on holiday in Malaysia. His recurring health problems have previously led to periods of hospitalisation and temporary transfers of royal duties to Crown Prince Haakon.
Norwegian Prime Minister Cancels Germany Trip
The King’s deteriorating condition has also affected the Norwegian government. Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre cancelled a planned trip to Germany. One where he had been scheduled to meet German Chancellor Friedrich Merz.
In a statement, Støre expressed his support for the royal family.
“The whole nation is with us as we send warm thoughts to the king and the rest of the royal family,” he said.
The situation has also prompted an emotional response from members of the public. People have begun laying flowers at Palace Square in front of the Royal Palace in Oslo. This comes particularly as concerns grow over the monarch’s health.
