King Charles kept informed after dinner shooting ahead of US visit

Buckingham Palace says King Charles III is closely monitoring developments after the Washington DC shooting incident.

King Charles III is being kept fully informed after the shooting at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner, according to Buckingham Palace.

The palace said discussions will take place throughout the day with US officials to assess whether the incident could affect operational planning for the King’s state visit to the United States, scheduled to begin on Monday.

It added that the King was greatly relieved that Donald Trump, Melania Trump, and all guests were unharmed.

Trump and the first lady were evacuated after an armed suspect reportedly rushed past a security checkpoint during the dinner in Washington DC.

British officials said security arrangements for the visit remain under review. Darren Jones said the UK government and Buckingham Palace had been working closely with US authorities before the trip.

Keir Starmer condemned the attack, saying violence against democratic institutions and press freedom must be strongly rejected.

King Charles and Queen Camilla are due to be hosted by President Trump during the four-day visit.

The trip is expected to proceed, with final security reviews now underway.
