He became king at three years old and never knew life without a crown.
Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, the King of Tooro in western Uganda and holder of the Guinness World Record as the world’s youngest reigning monarch, has died at the age of 34. Tooro’s Prime Minister Calvin Armstrong Rwomiire Akiiki announced the death on Friday, calling it “an immeasurable loss” to the royal family and the people of Tooro.
King Oyo ascended the throne in 1995 at just three years old, following the death of his father. A regency that included the queen mother governed in his name until he turned 18. At that time an official coronation was held. He went on to rule for over three decades, overseeing a kingdom of more than two million people as the 13th monarch.
The Tooro Kingdom did not disclose the cause of death. A Ugandan government minister was quoted in local media saying the king had been critically ill and was seeking treatment in the United States.
Though Uganda is governed by an elected president and parliament, its traditional kingdoms retain significant cultural influence. The Tooro Kingdom is one of several such institutions, and King Oyo was regarded as a widely respected figure. He championed causes including youth empowerment, education, climate conservation, and HIV/AIDS awareness throughout his reign.
Uganda’s largest traditional institution, the Buganda Kingdom, expressed condolences on Friday. Further describing King Oyo as a valuable figure to the country as a whole.
Akiiki confirmed that King Oyo was not officially married but assured the kingdom that succession was secured.
“His Majesty leaves behind a Prince as his heir, whose identity will be formally revealed at the appropriate time, in accordance with the traditions and customs of Tooro Kingdom,” he said.
“I call upon all the people of Tooro to remain united, calm and prayerful during this profoundly difficult time,” Akiiki added.
