Relief may finally be coming for students in Nigeria’s Federal Unity Colleges. The Association of Senior Civil Servants of Nigeria (ASCSN) has directed teachers to resume classes.
The union suspended its industrial action after talks with the Federal Ministry of Education. The meeting took place on September 17, 2026, over the proposed concession of King’s College, Lagos.
King’s College concession put on hold
ASCSN Secretary-General, Comrade Gamaliel Acho, announced the suspension in a statement on Friday. He said the concession plan would remain on hold for two weeks.
A seven-man committee will now review the concession agreement and related concerns. The committee includes government officials, labour representatives and King’s College Old Boys Association members.
“The Committee is expected to submit its report and recommendations within two weeks,” Acho said.
Following the agreement, ASCSN asked its members to suspend the strike. The decision follows a signed communiqué from the meeting.
No punishment for striking workers
Meanwhile, the union said workers involved in the protest would not face punishment. The agreement covers victimisation, harassment, sanctions and other disciplinary actions.
The police detachment at King’s College has also been withdrawn. This development follows the agreement reached between the government and labour unions.
Acho also thanked Education Minister Tunji Alausa and other ministry officials. He praised them for engaging with the unions and addressing their concerns.
The minister reportedly offered an “unreserved apology” over inadequate consultation with affected stakeholders.
What happens next?
Labour unions also plan to visit King’s College as part of their fact-finding mission. They will inspect the school and gather information about the proposed concession.
The findings will guide the committee’s recommendations over the next two weeks. For now, students and parents can expect Unity College teachers to return to classrooms.
However, ASCSN stressed that suspending the strike does not mean abandoning its concerns. The union said it remains committed to dialogue, due process and industrial peace.
