Lagos declares work-free day for Ìṣẹ̀ṣe celebration

The Ìṣẹ̀ṣe Day celebration comes after a week of traditional activities. Lagos has observed the occasion as a work-free day since 2023. The state government said it approved the holiday following a request from the Lagos State Council of Obas and Chiefs. Since 2023, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has continued the practice as part of efforts to support indigenous culture. The government also said the decision allows different religious and cultural groups to observe their traditions.

Meanwhile, this year’s celebration will feature traditional prayers, rituals, processions, drumming and other cultural activities linked to the Òrìṣà. The Association of African Traditional Religion Nigeria and Overseas will coordinate the activities. The state government, however, urged residents taking part in the celebration to maintain peace and respect people from other religious and cultural backgrounds.
