Lagos E-Hailing Drivers Begin Indefinite Strike Over Fares

Lagos e-hailing drivers have begun an indefinite strike over fares, commissions, deductions and welfare concerns, disrupting ride-hailing services

E-hailing drivers in Lagos State have begun an indefinite strike over fares, commissions, deductions and welfare concerns. The industrial action could disrupt ride-hailing services across the state.

Drivers under the Amalgamated Union of App-Based Transporters of Nigeria (AUATON) announced the strike in a notice on Saturday. They said the action would begin on Monday and continue until further notice.

According to AUATON, the strike follows unresolved concerns about drivers’ earnings, working conditions and safety. The union also raised concerns about security and the long-term sustainability of app-based transport services. Moreover, drivers say current operational policies continue to affect their ability to earn a decent living.

“Despite repeated efforts by drivers and stakeholders to draw attention to these concerns, many of the issues remain unresolved,” the union said.

AUATON explained that the strike aims to address challenges affecting drivers’ income and working conditions. The union, which is affiliated with the Nigeria Labour Congress, wants relevant stakeholders to take action on these issues.

Meanwhile, AUATON has appealed to fleet owners and managers to support drivers during the strike. It urged them to temporarily suspend daily remittance obligations and related operational targets. This relief would help drivers cope with the financial pressure of the industrial action.

However, the union has not announced an end date for the strike. Drivers say the action will continue until they receive satisfactory progress on their demands.
