Resident doctors at Ladoke Akintola University of Technology Teaching Hospital, Ogbomoso, have threatened to resume their suspended strike on August 28, 2026.
The Association of Resident Doctors issued the warning on Thursday. It said the strike would resume if the Oyo State Government and hospital management fail to address their outstanding welfare demands. The association suspended its previous industrial action on June 27. It gave the authorities eight weeks to resolve the issues. However, the doctors said several demands remain unresolved as the deadline approaches.
Doctors list outstanding demands
The demands include the release and full implementation of the Medical Residency Training Fund. The doctors also want the new Professional Allowance table implemented. Other demands include payment of minimum wage arrears and the recruitment of more resident doctors and other critical staff. The association said the demands are reasonable and have already been addressed in some other health institutions.
“These demands are neither outrageous nor unreasonable,” the doctors said.
The doctors also raised concerns about staff shortages at LTH Ogbomoso. They said the shortage has left existing doctors overworked.
“The Hospital is experiencing gross manpower shortages, while the inability to attract and retain resident doctors is further worsened by the prevailing welfare conditions,” the association said.
According to the doctors, frequent and prolonged call duties have become common because of the shortage. They warned that the situation could affect patient safety and the quality of healthcare at the hospital.
Doctors give August 28 strike deadline
The association appealed to Oyo State Governor and other authorities to intervene before the situation worsens. It said the doctors prefer dialogue and do not want to disrupt healthcare services across the state.
“Our preference remains constructive engagement, dialogue and a mutually beneficial resolution,” the association said.
However, the doctors said they could resume industrial action if the government fails to resolve the outstanding issues.
“We therefore wish to state clearly that if these outstanding demands remain unresolved, the Association shall resume its suspended industrial action effective 28 August 2026,” the statement said.
The association urged the hospital management and Oyo State Government to act before the deadline to prevent another disruption of medical services.
