Madonna University Expels Nursing Students Over Viral Video

Madonna University confirms the expulsion of nursing students over a viral hospital video as NANS appeals for clemency.

Viral video sparks controversy

Madonna University, Rivers State, has confirmed the expulsion of some nursing students over a viral video that sparked reactions online. The students recorded the video inside the university’s teaching hospital before sharing it on social media. They captioned the clip,

“No sick oo, nah Gen Z full hospital.”

The video quickly drew attention and raised questions about professionalism among nursing students.

The university’s Public Relations Officer, Chima Achu, confirmed the expulsion during a WhatsApp interview with PREMIUM TIMES on Saturday. He also said the university plans to release an official statement on the matter.

“We’re preparing a response that’ll go out on Monday; of course there’ll be an official position by the university,” Achu said.

NANS appeals to Madonna University

Following the development, the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) urged Madonna University management to reconsider the decision.

NANS President, Akinteye “Babtee” Afeez, admitted that the students’ actions were unacceptable. He said their behaviour fell short of the discipline and professionalism expected within the university community.

However, he appealed to the school to show mercy and reduce the punishment. Afeez argued that expulsion could seriously affect the students’ education, careers and future.

“Expulsion is, by far, a grave punishment,” he said.

He noted that the affected students had spent years, resources and effort pursuing professional careers in nursing.

Student body seeks second chance

Afeez further asked the university to replace the expulsion with a stern warning. He said the students now understand the seriousness of their actions and have learnt from the controversy.

“We are certain that these students now understand the gravity of what they have done and already regret their action of gross misconduct,” he said.

NANS believes the university can discipline the students without permanently ending their academic journey. According to Afeez, the young students still have dreams to pursue, families to support and futures to build.

“This must not be the point at which their dreams come to an end,” he said.

Madonna University yet to issue final statement

The student body also stressed the importance of discipline and responsible conduct among Nigerian students. Afeez said NANS would continue to promote academic excellence and ethical behaviour.

Meanwhile, many people will now watch for Madonna University’s official statement. The university’s response could provide more details about the students’ actions and the reasons behind the expulsion.

For the affected nursing students, however, the controversy could have lasting consequences unless the university accepts NANS’ appeal for clemency.

Students urged to learn from controversy

The NANS president expressed hope that the university would consider the appeal. He said the association supports academic excellence, discipline and responsible behaviour among Nigerian students.

At the same time, the controversy has renewed conversations about professionalism among students in healthcare training.

For now, attention remains on Madonna University’s official response expected on Monday.
