Oyo State Governor and presidential candidate of the Allied People’s Movement, Seyi Makinde, has called for stronger cooperation among opposition parties ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Makinde spoke on Thursday at the APM national convention held at the Dr Rilwanu Sulaimanu Adamu Square in Bauchi. He said a credible opposition was vital to sustaining democracy. He urged the party’s new leaders to work with other opposition groups ahead of 2027.
“The presence of a credible opposition is what sustains democracy. So, our new leaders must be ready to work with other opposition parties to ensure that we give Nigeria an incredible alternative in the 2027 general election,” Makinde said.
Makinde wants election focused on results
The governor said the 2027 election should focus on results rather than campaign promises and government announcements. He urged Nigerians to judge governments by job creation, security, economic growth and improved living conditions.
“The 2027 election should not simply be about what government has done. It should be about what has changed for Nigerians,” he said.
Makinde also called for a stronger federal system. He said more decisions and resources should move closer to the people. However, he stressed that greater powers must come with accountability. The governor also urged politicians to disagree without turning opponents into enemies.
“We want a politics where disagreement does not make us enemies; a politics where opposition is not merely about removing those in power, but about presenting a credible and demonstrating a better alternative,” he said.
APM leadership backs Makinde
Makinde said the main goal ahead of 2027 should be to give Nigerians a genuine choice about the country’s future. At the convention, Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed was inaugurated as the national leader of the APM.
Mohammed expressed confidence in the Makinde and Lawal Daura presidential ticket. He described Makinde as the best candidate for Nigeria. He also promised that the party would promote inclusive governance if elected. APM National Chairman, Yusuf Dantalle, urged Nigerians across the country to support the party.
Dantalle said the APM was committed to building a stronger and more prosperous Nigeria. He added that the party would take its message of hope, unity and development to communities across the country ahead of the 2027 election.
