Manchester United’s difficult run continued with a Champions League defeat against Atletico Madrid after conceding inside the opening minute, extending their winless streak to five matches.
Head coach Michael Carrick made five changes to his starting line-up, and United showed signs of improvement despite the disappointing result. However, they were unable to recover from an early setback that put the hosts in control.
Atletico struck almost immediately when Alex Baena ran beyond Diogo Dalot to collect a pass over United’s defence. He squared the ball for Pablo Barrios, whose shot passed underneath Ayden Heaven and into the net.United responded with several opportunities to equalise before half-time. Bryan Mbeumo wasted two promising chances, while Marcus Rashford failed to connect with a pass from Lisandro Martinez.
After the break, captain Bruno Fernandes came close to restoring parity. He met Youri Tielemans’ lofted pass and attempted to lift the ball over Atletico goalkeeper Jan Oblak, but his effort drifted wide. Atletico also threatened to extend their advantage. Alejandro Grimaldo struck the post with a free-kick, while Julian Alvarez failed to capitalise on another opportunity created by Barrios.
United’s hopes of mounting a late comeback suffered a major blow when Leny Yoro was sent off. The France defender was dismissed for bringing down substitute Jonathan David while positioned as the last defender. The hosts took advantage of their numerical superiority, with former Everton striker Ademola Lookman scoring in the 79th minute to seal the victory.
The defeat deepened United’s poor run of form and left Carrick facing further questions about the team’s inability to turn improved performances into positive results.
Atletico, meanwhile, secured an important Champions League victory, while United became the first English side to lose in the competition this season.
