Former gang leader Duane “Keffe D” Davis has been sentenced to at least 40 years in prison for orchestrating the murder of rap legend Tupac Shakur. A jury found the 63-year-old guilty of murder with a deadly weapon in September. Shakur died in a drive-by shooting in Las Vegas on 7 September 1996. Davis has vowed to appeal the verdict.
Prosecutors argued that Davis organised the attack, even though he did not pull the trigger. They said he supplied the gun used in the killing and directed his nephew, Orlando Anderson, to open fire. Anderson died in an unrelated shooting in 1998. Meanwhile, Davis admitted his involvement in his 2019 memoir, Compton Street Legend. He also discussed the case publicly, which helped investigators build their case against him.
During the sentencing hearing, Shakur’s sister, Sekyiwa Shakur, described the pain her family had endured.
“The loss of Tupac, for a long time, crippled my family,” she told the court.
She asked the judge to impose the maximum sentence. Shakur’s brother, Maurice Shakur, also requested the longest possible prison term. Judge Carli Kierny told Davis,
“You don’t get to take a man from his family.”
She added that the world had never forgotten Tupac or his death. Davis’s conviction marks a major breakthrough in one of America’s most famous unsolved murder cases. In 2008, he spoke to police about the killing during a confidential interview linked to the investigation into rapper Notorious B.I.G.’s death.
However, his later public statements and memoir weakened the protection he had received against prosecution. His defence team argued that his claims were exaggerated stories designed to sell books. Still, jurors found him guilty. Tupac was only 25 when he died, but his music and influence continue to inspire fans worldwide.
