The IGP has approved a fresh investigation into Mohbad’s death. His family says the police re-investigation is ongoing and fully supported.
The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has approved the Aloba family’s request for a fresh probe into Mohbad’s death. The late singer, whose real name was Ilerioluwa Oladimeji Aloba, died in September 2023.
The family submitted its petition to the IGP on April 14, 2026. Force Headquarters received it in Abuja on May 7. According to the family’s lawyer, Oladayo Ogungbe, the petition raised concerns about gaps in the earlier investigation. It also called for a detailed forensic reconstruction of the events surrounding Mohbad’s death.
Following the approval, police authorities sent the petition to the Lagos State Police Command. The matter then went to officers in the Special Enquiry Bureau. The family’s representative has already met with the new investigators. Since then, the family says it has remained engaged with the team and provided support for the probe.
The development comes after the Federal High Court in Abuja dismissed Suit No. FHC/ABJ/CS/363/2026 on September 25, 2026. However, Ogungbe said the suit had no connection with the family’s police petition.
“The Aloba Family therefore does not wish the public to conflate the dismissal of that suit with the separate investigative process,” he said.
The family said it will provide documents, witnesses and other relevant materials. It also urged the police to act independently and professionally.
“The re-investigation is ongoing. The Aloba Family remains fully engaged. The pursuit of justice for Mohbad continues,” the statement concluded.
The Aloba family says it remains committed to the fresh investigation and hopes the process will finally establish the facts surrounding Mohbad’s death.
