FCT Minister Nyesom Wike has reaffirmed his support for President Bola Tinubu’s re-election in 2027. He also clarified his position on the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and other elections.
Wike said his support for Tinubu remains firm. However, he stressed that the support does not mean the PDP will avoid other elections. According to him, the party can still field candidates for governorship and legislative contests in 2027.
In a statement signed by his Senior Special Assistant, Lere Olayinka, Wike explained the idea behind the proposed “rainbow coalition”. He said the coalition has no link with the All Progressives Congress (APC). Instead, it brings together politicians from different parties who support Tinubu’s second-term bid.
“Most importantly, the rainbow coalition has nothing to do with the APC,” Wike said.
He added that the coalition aims to mobilise support for Tinubu across political parties. Wike also recalled the 2023 elections, when voters backed different parties across various positions.
He cited results from Imo, Abia, Enugu and Ebonyi as examples. Wike noted that some voters supported APC candidates in legislative elections but chose another party for president.
“Politics is local,” he said, urging politicians to focus on their states separately.
Wike also rejected claims that he promised the PDP would not contest other elections.
“What I said and stand for is that I will mobilise support for the re-election of the President,” he said.
For Wike, the immediate priority remains Tinubu’s presidential campaign. He urged political stakeholders to work for Tinubu’s re-election first.
After that, he said, politicians can focus on governorship and legislative contests in their respective states.
