Real Madrid survived a late scare at Elche as Carlos Espi scored in the 91st minute to secure a 3-2 LaLiga victory.
Madrid appeared to be cruising after building a two-goal lead, but Elche fought back to level the match before Espi delivered the decisive moment. Kylian Mbappe played a key role in the victory, scoring one goal and providing the assist for Espi’s late winner. Yan Diomande also contributed to Madrid’s attack by setting up the second goal.
Espi said he was “the happiest man in the world” after scoring the winner. He praised Mbappe for the assist and immediately turned his attention to Sunday’s derby.
The victory moved Real Madrid level with Barcelona at the top of LaLiga. The result also came after a difficult night for Vinicius Junior. The Brazilian forward failed to complete a dribble or deliver an accurate cross, lost possession nine times and missed two big chances.
Madrid manager Jose Mourinho admitted he was worried during the match despite praising Espi, Diomande and Aurelien Tchouameni for their contributions. The victory gives Madrid momentum ahead of the derby, although the comeback conceded against Elche will provide Mourinho with areas to address.
