A mother in Bauchi State is desperately calling for justice after her eight-year-old daughter was allegedly raped by a 45-year-old officer of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency. The suspect, Muhammad Mustapha Makama, is a neighbour of the victim’s family. According to the family’s legal counsel, the child was sent to buy a sachet of water at the suspect’s residence when the alleged attack took place.
The mother, Salamatu Musa, reported the incident to the E Division of the Bauchi State Police Command on July 5, 2026. Makama was arrested shortly after. He has now spent nearly three weeks in police custody without being charged in court.
The case is being handled by Barrister Alkasim Mohammed, a human rights lawyer representing the African Child Development and Human Right Protection. He has since petitioned the Bauchi State Commissioner of Police, raising alarm over what he described as deliberate behind-the-scenes moves to secure the suspect’s quiet release.
The petition comes despite the fact that the Bauchi State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice had already issued a legal opinion on July 23. One which favoured prosecution of the suspect, based on available evidence, facts, and medical reports. In plain terms, the legal foundation for charging this man exists. The charge has simply not come.
Barrister Alkasim commended the police for arresting a serving security operative but stressed that an arrest without prosecution is not justice. The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Nafiu Habib, confirmed the arrest and assured the public that the suspect would soon be charged in court.
