South African Grammy-winning star Tyla has removed Lagos from her A*POP World Tour schedule. Fans noticed the update on her official website after days of heated conversations online. The Lagos show was first announced for December 22, 2026. It was expected to be the first African stop before Cape Town on January 4 and Johannesburg on January 9. However, the Nigerian date has now disappeared from the tour list. So far, Tyla and her management have not explained why the concert was removed.
The decision comes after many Nigerians called for a boycott of the concert. The online campaign followed renewed concerns about xenophobic attacks and reported killings of Nigerians living in South Africa. While some people argued that South African artistes should not perform in Nigeria during the crisis, others believed musicians should not be blamed for political or social problems. As a result, the debate quickly spread across social media.
Meanwhile, African Action Congress presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore opposed the boycott campaign. He wrote on X,
“Nigerians should direct their anger at their real enemies… No one should hold a talented musician like @Tyllaaaaaaa vicariously liable for the crimes of xenophobia.”
He also added,
“Tyla’s Lagos concert must go on.”
Despite his position, the concert has now been removed from the tour schedule.The controversy grew even bigger after activist VeryDarkMan threatened to stop the event. In a Facebook post, he declared,
“TYLA SHOW WILL NOT BE HAPPENING IN NIGERIA.” He also said, “WE ARE STANDING IN SOLIDARITY TO SAY NO TO THE PROMOTERS AND CELEBRITIES FROM SOUTH AFRICA WHO HAVE REFUSED TO SPEAK UP AGAINST THESE ATTACKS ON OTHER AFRICANS LIVING IN SOUTH AFRICA.”
For now, Tyla’s world tour will continue across Europe, North America and South Africa without a Lagos stop.
