Niger NSCDC chief Suberu Siyaka Aniviye steps aside after suspected illegal miners die in custody. Investigation into the deaths begins.
Interior Minister Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo ordered the Niger State Commandant, Suberu Siyaka Aniviye, to step aside. The order came after enforcement operations against illegal mining on September 15 and 16, 2026. The deaths reportedly happened early Thursday around the M.I. Wushishi/Lukoto axis in Minna.
Tunji-Ojo described the incident as unfortunate and ordered a full investigation.
“It is an unfortunate incident; however, a full-scale investigation will be conducted while the commandant under whose watch this happened remains suspended,” he said.
The minister also asked residents to remain calm and law-abiding. He assured them that the investigation would remain transparent.
Meanwhile, NSCDC Commandant General Ahmed Abubakar Audi has launched an internal probe. The Corps directed Aniviye to report to its national headquarters in Abuja. He will appear before a panel alongside senior officers handling operations, mining, legal matters, intelligence and investigations.
The NSCDC has also deployed a new commandant to lead the Niger State Command. According to the Corps, the inquiry will establish what caused the deaths. It will also determine whether any officer broke the law or operational rules. Personnel found culpable could face disciplinary measures or criminal sanctions.
The Corps also reaffirmed its commitment to protecting people in custody. At the same time, it said operations against illegal mining would continue. However, officers must carry out those operations within the law and professional standards.
