British-Ghanaian rapper Sway DaSafo has died at 44, just days after celebrating his birthday. The artist, whose real name was Derek Andrew Safo, made a major mark on British hip-hop.
MOBO Awards announced the news in an emotional Instagram tribute. The organisation described his death as deeply saddening. Sway became the first unsigned act to win the MOBO Award for Best Hip-Hop Act in 2005.
His historic win came before he released his debut album. He beat major American rappers, including 50 Cent and The Game, to claim the award.
“It was a huge moment. Not just for Sway, but for UK Hip Hop,” MOBO said.
The organisation also praised his role in helping British rap gain wider recognition. Sway later became part of the MOBO family in other capacities.
Born in North London to Ghanaian parents, Sway built a strong career in music. He started with groups such as Phynix Crew and One. Later, he launched his solo career and released five studio albums and two EPs. His 2006 hit, “Little Derek,” reached No. 30 on the UK Singles Chart. The song also featured on his debut album, This Is My Demo.
Beyond music, Sway explored acting and production. He appeared in the 2011 premiere of the popular British crime drama Top Boy. He also featured in the 2012 film The Grind. MOBO described him as an artist and champion of British music. The organisation sent condolences to his family, friends and fans.
Sway leaves behind a lasting name in UK hip-hop.
