NNPC Restricts N66 Fuel Discount to Motorists Using Its Fuel App Until October 31

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC) has restricted access to its N66-per-litre fuel discount to motorists who use its mobile app. The decision means customers must download the NNPC Fuel App and pay through it to enjoy the offer. However, the policy has raised concerns among Nigerians who lack smartphones or struggle with mobile payments.

The Federal Government announced the 30-day petrol discount on October 8, 2026. The initiative aims to ease rising fuel costs and support Nigerians, especially commercial transport operators. Meanwhile, NNPC says the discount forms part of its Independence Anniversary promotion. The company initially planned to run the offer from October 1 to 7. However, it has now extended the promotion until October 31, 2026.

NNPC’s Chief Corporate Communications Officer, Andy Odeh, explained why the company restricted access to the offer. According to Leadership, Odeh said the move would “ensure effective control, prevent abuse, and ensure the benefit reaches intended customers”. He also explained that the company wants to encourage more Nigerians to use its mobile app. Additionally, NNPC hopes the app will improve customers’ experience at its retail outlets.

Despite these reasons, the policy has sparked questions about accessibility. Some motorists may not own smartphones or understand how to complete payments through mobile apps. Consequently, these customers could miss out on the discount despite buying fuel at NNPC stations. The company has yet to address these concerns in the announcement.

For now, motorists who want to enjoy the N66-per-litre discount must use the NNPC Fuel App before the promotion ends on October 31, 2026.
