Gunmen who abducted National Youth Service Corps members travelling from Bayelsa State to Abuja three days ago have contacted their families with a ransom demand of N20 million per victim, a family source has confirmed.
The abduction occurred along the Aloma-Egane Expressway in Ofu Local Government Area of Kogi State. The corps members had just completed their three-week orientation exercise in Bayelsa and were heading to Abuja. It was on this journey the attack occurred.
A family member of one of the victims told Daily Trust:
“One of our daughters was kidnapped on her way from Bayelsa State to Abuja after completing three weeks orientation camp. The kidnappers are requesting N20 million naira.”
The family has since appealed to the Federal Government, the NYSC, and security agencies to intensify efforts to secure the release of those still being held.
The Kogi State Police Command had earlier confirmed the abduction of passengers, including NYSC members, along the route. Following a joint security operation, 11 people, including the drivers of the two vehicles involved, were rescued. However, an unspecified number of victims remain in captivity. Efforts to locate and free them are ongoing.
Young Nigerians completing their mandatory national service should not be targets. These corps members fulfilled their civic duty, spent three weeks at orientation, and were returning home. What awaited them on the highway to Abuja was a crime that has become disturbingly familiar on Nigerian roads.
