Peter Obi, presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), says he is prepared to make the ultimate sacrifice for Nigeria if required in the course of serving the country.
Obi spoke during an exclusive interview with Rufai Oseni, an Arise Television journalist, while discussing insecurity and the abduction of schoolchildren across parts of the country.
Asked what he would do if he were commander-in-chief while kidnapped children remained in captivity, the former Anambra governor said decisive leadership was required to confront criminal elements.
“I’ve fought criminality in Anambra State. You ask people, head-on,” Obi said.
He said the government must establish authority over criminal groups and ensure that the state remains firmly in control.
“It’s one government. It’s either I’m in charge or they’re in charge,” he said.
“One person must be in charge.”
When asked whether he was suggesting that the current administration was not in control, Obi repeated his position.
“I said one person must be in charge,” he said.
The former governor added that confronting insecurity requires courage and a willingness to make sacrifices.
“We will declare war. If you’re ready to live, you must be ready to die,” he said.
“If you’re not ready to die, go home.”
Asked directly whether he was prepared to die for Nigeria, Obi responded in the affirmative.
“Yes,” he said.
