Authorities say the group planned to use drones, snipers and explosives to target a high-profile White House event.
The FBI has arrested five men accused of plotting an attack on a UFC event held at the White House on Sunday.
According to the US Department of Justice, the suspects allegedly planned to use explosive-laden drones to strike nearby buildings and create panic among attendees. Prosecutors said the group intended to direct fleeing crowds toward sniper positions before launching a second wave of attacks.
The FBI said the plot was uncovered after one suspect’s mother alerted authorities about his firearm purchases and online activities. Investigators later reviewed encrypted messages that allegedly detailed plans to target high-profile figures, including politicians, business leaders and other public officials.
The event, which marked the United States’ 250th anniversary and coincided with President Donald Trump’s 80th birthday, attracted thousands of spectators on the White House South Lawn and surrounding areas.
All five suspects have been charged with conspiracy to commit murder and face possible life sentences if convicted. Investigations into the alleged plot remain ongoing.
