The Ogun State House of Assembly has cleared former Speaker Olakunle Oluomo of the embezzlement allegation that accompanied his removal from office in 2024. Lawmakers also resolved to convert Oluomo’s impeachment into a resignation after adopting a report during Wednesday’s plenary at the Assembly Complex in Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta.
The resolution followed the presentation of the Committee of the Whole House report by the Deputy Speaker, Mrs. Lateefat Ajayi. The report stemmed from a motion that Oluomo submitted to the Assembly on March 31. In the motion, he requested either his exoneration or the presentation of evidence supporting the allegation made against him.
Assembly adopts committee report
Ajayi moved the motion for the adoption of the report, while Mr. Yusuf Amosun seconded it. Members of the House later approved the motion unanimously through a voice vote.
After reviewing the matter, lawmakers held that the embezzlement allegation never formed part of the official notice of removal served on Oluomo before he left office. They also concluded that the available evidence failed to establish any case of embezzlement against the former Speaker. Therefore, the House agreed that the allegation could no longer stand.
House withdraws embezzlement allegation
The report stated that the House carefully reviewed all available evidence before reaching its decision. Lawmakers also considered Oluomo’s plea under Section 36 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), which guarantees every citizen the right to a fair hearing.
According to the report, the former Speaker requested either a formal exoneration or the presentation of evidence supporting the allegation. After examining the facts, the Assembly resolved to withdraw the embezzlement allegation entirely. As a result, lawmakers agreed that the accusation would no longer form part of the reasons for Oluomo’s removal from office.
Impeachment converted to resignation
Beyond clearing the former Speaker of the allegation, the House also overturned his impeachment and formally converted it into a resignation.
The Assembly explained that members reached the decision in the interest of camaraderie, unity and harmony within the legislative chamber. The resolution removes the embezzlement allegation from Oluomo’s legislative record. It also replaces his impeachment with a resignation recognised by the Ogun State House of Assembly.
