Over 6,000 NDC Members Defect to PDP in Enugu Ahead of 2027

Over 6,000 NDC members have joined the PDP in Enugu ahead of the 2027 elections, citing concerns over the party’s candidates.

More than 6,000 members of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) have joined the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Enugu State. The defection happened ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The new PDP members came from all 260 wards and 17 local government areas in the state. NDC stalwart, Godwin Obasi, led the group during the formal reception on Sunday.

Obasi said the group left the NDC after the party allegedly picked unpopular candidates for elective positions. He said the decision to join the PDP was theirs to make.

“We decided that we were going to join the PDP. It is our right and choice,” he said.

Obasi added that more than 6,000 members had moved into the PDP.

Meanwhile, Enugu PDP Chairman, Chief Vitus Okechi, welcomed the defectors into the party. He promised them equal rights and opportunities within the PDP. The party’s governorship candidate, Chief Uche Nnaji, also assured the new members of full inclusion. Nnaji further called for stronger public participation in the state’s political process.

Nnaji also criticised the Enugu State Government over taxes, pensions and public spending. He alleged that the government had failed to deliver enough development despite rising revenue. According to him, the administration had focused heavily on taxation. He claimed that even newborn babies and dead bodies faced taxes. Nnaji also alleged that pensioners and retirees remained unpaid. He said,

“Our pensioners are not being paid.”

He further claimed that Tinubu’s administration had released significant funds to states. However, these claims about government revenue, pensions and taxation remain allegations from the PDP candidate.
