The Senate has approved a ₦50 million donation for the families of two teachers and three soldiers killed during the Oyo school abduction.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio announced the intervention during Wednesday’s plenary. He described the victims’ deaths as painful sacrifices in Nigeria’s fight against insecurity.
The decision came a day after the Senate commended President Bola Tinubu, the Nigerian Armed Forces and other security agencies for rescuing the abducted pupils and teachers. The victims regained their freedom after spending 56 days in captivity.
Families to receive ₦10m each
Akpabio disclosed that each of the five affected families would receive ₦10 million, bringing the total donation to ₦50 million.
He said the support recognises the courage of those who lost their lives. It also offers some relief to their grieving families.
According to the Senate President, the country must continue to honour citizens who make the ultimate sacrifice while serving others.
Senate praises rescue operation
The Senate also applauded the Nigerian Armed Forces and other security agencies for the successful rescue operation.
Akpabio credited the security agencies for their commitment and bravery throughout the mission. He also acknowledged President Tinubu’s support for efforts that secured the victims’ release.
Lawmakers had earlier praised the operation during Tuesday’s plenary. They described the rescue as a major breakthrough in the fight against insecurity.
Victims paid the ultimate price
Akpabio identified the slain teachers as Michael Oyedokun and John Olaleye.
He said abductors beheaded Oyedokun while he remained in captivity. He also disclosed that gunmen shot Olaleye during the attack on the school, citing information from the school principal.
The Senate President also identified the fallen soldiers as Lieutenant F.A. Isaac, Private Silas Musa and Sergeant Abena John Jerome.
The three soldiers lost their lives during the rescue operation while working to secure the safe return of the abducted pupils and teachers.
Senate honours their sacrifice
Akpabio said the donation reflects the Senate’s appreciation for the courage shown by the teachers and military personnel.
He recalled that gunmen abducted pupils and teachers from two schools in Oriire Local Government Area on May 15.
According to him, the victims paid the ultimate price during the attack and the rescue operation that followed.
The Senate President expressed sympathy to the bereaved families and prayed for the repose of the deceased.
He also reaffirmed the National Assembly’s support for security agencies as they continue efforts to protect lives and restore peace across the country.
