Iran Threatens More Trade Route Closures as US Intensifies Military Strikes

Iran has warned it could shut more regional trade routes as fresh US strikes target its military positions.

Iran’s Revolutionary Guards have threatened to block additional oil and gas export routes after the United States launched a new wave of military strikes. The group said the Strait of Hormuz would remain closed until Washington ends what it called “acts of aggression.”

The US Central Command (Centcom) said its forces carried out drone, air and naval strikes on Iranian military targets on Wednesday. The operation targeted coastal defences and cruise missile storage and launch sites on Greater Tunb Island. According to Centcom, the strikes were aimed at reducing Iran’s ability to attack commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz.

Iran also claimed its military launched attacks on US targets in Jordan, Kuwait and Bahrain. Those countries said they intercepted incoming drones and missiles.

The renewed conflict has increased tensions around the Strait of Hormuz, a key global oil shipping route. Oil prices have risen sharply as tanker traffic through the waterway continues to slow.

The latest escalation follows the US decision to restore a naval blockade on Iranian ports after a ceasefire agreement between both countries broke down.
