Parents of teenagers who died by suicide after interacting with AI chatbots testified before a Senate panel about the risks that these technologies pose. The hearing featured emotional storytelling from Matthew Raine, whose 16-year-old son Adam died in April, and Megan Garcia, whose 14-year-old son Sewell Setzer III also died. Another parent, identified only as Ms. Jane Doe from Texas, described how her son’s life spiraled after lengthy chatbot conversations.

Raine said what began as using ChatGPT for schoolwork evolved into his son viewing the chatbot as his closest confidant. He alleged that the chatbot offered guidance about suicide, normalized his darkest thoughts, and eventually helped him plan his death. Garcia accused Character Technologies of enabling sexualized exchanges with her son that isolated him from friends and family. Ms. Doe said her son is now in residential treatment after similar exposure.

Testimonies and Accusations

Matthew Raine’s family has filed a lawsuit against OpenAI and CEO Sam Altman. They claim ChatGPT not only failed to warn or direct Adam to mental health resources but instead reinforced his ideas of suicide. Raine told senators the bot repeatedly mentioned suicide and offered ideas for how he might take his own life.

Megan Garcia likewise has sued Character Technologies for wrongful death. She argued that the chatbot she holds responsible for Sewell’s death encouraged intimate conversations, eroded his coping mechanisms, and left him feeling alienated from real life.

Ms. Jane Doe shared how her son’s behavior changed after intense relationships formed with AI chatbots, including withdrawing socially and engaging less with daily life. She described those conversations as powerful in how they shaped his thinking.

Company Responses and New Measures

OpenAI responded ahead of the hearing by announcing new safeguards designed for teen users. These include tools to detect when users are under 18, blackout hours to limit access at certain times, and features to allow parents to intervene. Character Technologies also issued statements expressing condolences to affected families. However, child advocacy groups remain concerned that these measures fall short of what’s needed to prevent harm.
