Former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi has marked his 65th birthday with the successful completion of 65 free surgeries for children in Lagos.
Obi disclosed this on Thursday after attending the final follow-up clinic and appreciation programme at Mother Mary Hospital, Isolo.
The medical initiative formed part of activities to mark his 65th birthday.
Obi visits children after surgeries
Obi said he attended the final clinic on Wednesday, where he met some of the children and their parents.
He expressed gratitude to God for the successful outcome of the surgeries. He also praised the medical team, hospital management and everyone who supported the initiative.
“I am deeply grateful to God Almighty for guiding the medical team throughout the process and for granting all 65 children safe and successful surgeries,” he said.
The surgeries included adenotonsillectomy, a procedure that removes enlarged or chronically infected tonsils and adenoids.
According to Obi, such conditions can cause breathing difficulties, recurrent infections and sleep-related problems in children.
The procedures were led by Dr Folaseye Adebayo and her medical team.
Parents share testimonies
Obi said the testimonies from parents made the final follow-up programme particularly touching.
He said the parents shared how the procedures had improved their children’s health and quality of life.
The former governor thanked Dr Adebayo and her team for their work. He also appreciated the hospital management, parents and other contributors to the initiative.
“For me, birthdays are not merely occasions for celebration. They are opportunities to give back, touch lives, and make a meaningful difference in the lives of others,” Obi said.
He added that the initiative gave him an opportunity to contribute to the wellbeing of children while marking his birthday.
“I thank God for the privilege of being part of this initiative and, most importantly, for the gift of 65 healthy and hopeful children,” he said.
Obi links birthday to service
Obi has continued to associate his birthday activities with humanitarian causes and public service.
As part of his 65th birthday activities, he also donated N10 million to St Raphael’s Hospital in Umueri, Anambra State.
He said such interventions reflect his belief that birthdays should provide opportunities to give back to society rather than focus solely on personal celebration.
The former Anambra governor expressed appreciation to everyone involved in the surgeries and prayed for continued blessings for those committed to improving the lives of others.
