Peter Obi says he will reinstate fuel subsidy if elected president in 2027 after tackling corruption in Nigeria’s petroleum sector.
Obi Changes Position On Fuel Subsidy
Peter Obi has promised to reinstate fuel subsidy if he becomes Nigeria’s president in 2027. The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) made the promise during a town hall meeting in Sokoto.
The meeting was organised for the Obi/Kwankwaso presidential ticket. During the event, Obi said his administration would first tackle corruption in Nigeria’s petroleum sector before bringing back the subsidy.
‘Corruption Is the Real Problem’
Obi’s latest position differs from his earlier comments on fuel subsidy. The former Anambra State governor had previously said he would not restore the subsidy after its removal.
Instead, he said his government would ensure that savings from subsidy removal went towards meeting the needs of Nigerians. However, his latest comments suggest a different approach if he wins the 2027 presidential election.
“People are talking about subsidy but what is all about it is corruption. By removing the corruption, I assure you that we will bring back subsidy,” Obi said.
He also identified corruption as one of Nigeria’s biggest challenges. According to him, his administration would fight corruption across every sector of the country.
Education And Security Top Obi’s Agenda
Meanwhile, Obi called on Nigerians to support NDC candidates at all levels in the 2027 elections. He described solving Nigeria’s challenges as a collective responsibility.
The former governor also promised to introduce what he described as a “politics of care and service.” He said his government would use Nigeria’s resources to improve security, education and other key sectors.
“Education is our number one priority after unity and security,” Obi said.
Obi Promises Railway Connections
Beyond education and security, Obi also promised to connect all state capitals with railway lines. He said the project would improve economic activities and support development across the country.
The railway plan forms part of his wider promise to improve infrastructure and make movement across Nigeria easier.
With his latest comments, fuel subsidy has once again become part of Obi’s 2027 campaign message. His position also brings the debate over subsidy removal, corruption and the rising cost of living back into focus.
