A deadly bandit attack in Plateau State has left at least 25 people feared dead and several properties destroyed.
No fewer than 25 people are feared to have been killed after suspected bandits attacked Kawel community in Mushere District, Bokkos Local Government Area of Plateau State.
According to local reports, the victims included 12 security personnel, among them two senior military officers, and eight vigilante members who were supporting security operations in the area. The attack occurred when a joint patrol team travelling through Garga, Kyaram and Gyambau communities was ambushed by heavily armed bandits near Wanka around 2:00 p.m.
Following the ambush, the attackers reportedly invaded Kyaram community, looted valuables worth millions of naira and rustled a large number of cattle belonging to residents.
Community leaders say the latest Plateau bandit attack highlights the growing insecurity along the borders of Plateau, Taraba and Bauchi states, where residents have faced repeated attacks, kidnappings and cattle rustling over the past several years.
Authorities are yet to release an official casualty figure as security operations continue in the affected communities.
