Protests have erupted in Minna, Niger State, over the reported deaths of 37 suspected illegal miners. The detainees reportedly died while in Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) custody.
Demonstrators gathered in Tunga, Maitumbi and parts of Bosso Road. Some protesters allegedly destroyed campaign posters and damaged government property. Security agencies have since deployed personnel across the city. Their presence aims to prevent further unrest and restore calm.
Meanwhile, the deaths have raised concerns among residents across the state. Many are demanding answers about what happened to the detainees. In response, the Niger State Government has set up a committee of inquiry. The committee will investigate the circumstances surrounding the reported deaths. Authorities have also appealed to residents to remain calm while the investigation continues.
The development has also triggered action from the Federal Government. Interior Minister Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo ordered a full-scale investigation on Friday. He directed NSCDC Commandant-General, Prof. Ahmed Abubakar Audi, to ensure a transparent investigation.
Audi subsequently suspended the Niger State Commandant from duty. He ordered the commandant to report to NSCDC headquarters in Abuja. The official will appear before the panel investigating the incident.
In addition, Audi directed several senior officers to appear before the inquiry panel. They include the Heads of Operations, Mining, Legal, Intelligence and Investigation. The NSCDC also sent a new commandant to take charge in Niger State.
According to NSCDC spokesman Babawale Afolabi, the inquiry will be thorough. He said personnel who breached the law or professional standards would face appropriate sanctions.
Authorities are now working to uncover what caused the deaths and prevent further tension in Minna.
