Rising Russian attacks near Ukraine border are pushing NATO defenses to the limit.
Romania has reported a sharp rise in Russian drone incursions and emergency air policing missions along its border with Ukraine. This has signaled growing pressure on NATO’s eastern flank. According to Romania’s Defense Ministry, 2026 is already on track to break records for airspace violations and drone debris discoveries. All linked to Russian strikes on nearby Ukrainian targets.
Data shows that by late April, Romania had recorded seven confirmed airspace violations by Russian drones, 11 instances of munition fragments landing on its territory, and 18 NATO air policing missions. These incidents were triggered by at least 25 Russian attacks close to the shared border. The figures are rapidly approaching the totals recorded for all of 2025.
The surge is tied to Russia’s expanding long-range strike campaign in Ukraine. These strikes are particularly targeting ports along the Danube River, which lies just meters from NATO territory. While there is no evidence Russia is directly targeting Romania, officials say the proximity of attacks increases the risk of spillover into allied airspace.
Since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Romania has logged dozens of such incidents. NATO forces have so far exercised restraint, focusing on monitoring rather than intercepting drones unless there is a direct threat to lives or infrastructure.
The growing frequency of these incursions underscores rising tensions on NATO’s border.
