Cristiano Ronaldo has left Portugal’s national team training camp ahead of their Nations League match against Denmark. He issued a cryptic statement promising to reveal the full truth about his departure to the Portuguese public at a later date.
The statement, shared on his social media, read:
“After the national team’s coach’s press conference, and following a conversation with the president of the Portuguese Football Federation, I decided to leave the national team’s training camp. In due course I will tell all the Portuguese the truth about the reasons that led me to leave the national team, to which I always devoted myself. Now is the time to wish Portugal and all my teammates, without exception, good luck.”
The timing deepened the mystery. Portugal head coach Jorge Jesus had stated at a press conference moments before Ronaldo’s departure that there was no problem with the player. Within minutes, Ronaldo had left Copenhagen’s Parken and his private jet was in the air, heading toward Madrid.
Reports indicate the departure followed a conversation between Ronaldo and the president of the Portuguese Football Federation, though the content of that exchange has not been disclosed. Notably, sources close to the situation indicate this is not a definitive retirement from international football.
Ronaldo is stepping away from this particular window of four Nations League matches, not from the national team altogether.
