Marvel fans finally got the news they have been waiting for. Ryan Gosling is officially joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Ghost Rider. The surprise announcement happened at San Diego Comic-Con and instantly got fans talking online. The new movie is set for release in 2028 and will be the third live-action Ghost Rider film.
Before Gosling appeared on stage, Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige teased the audience about when the actor would finally join the MCU. Moments later, the lights went out. When they came back on, Gosling walked onto the stage to loud cheers. Looking excited, he asked, “Wow, is this really happening?” The actor also revealed that Ghost Rider is a role he has “wanted to play for a very long time.”
Ghost Rider is the superhero identity of motorcycle stuntman Johnny Blaze. His story begins after he makes a dangerous deal with the villain Mephisto to save his surrogate father. As a result, he becomes linked to the powerful Spirit of Vengeance, Zarathos, and gains supernatural abilities. The character was previously played by Nicolas Cage in Ghost Rider (2007) and Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance (2011). Interestingly, Gosling had already hinted earlier this year that he was speaking with Marvel about the role.
Meanwhile, Shawn Levy will direct the movie. He previously directed Deadpool & Wolverine and is also working with Gosling on Star Wars: Starfighter. Gosling called Levy the “only” director for the project. Levy shared that they often discussed ideas for Ghost Rider while filming together. He told fans,
“As Ryan started talking about his vision for this character, we started riffing, and I finally said, ‘bro, let’s ride,’ so guys, we’ll see you in 2028.”
With the announcement now official, excitement is already building for Ghost Rider’s fiery return to the MCU.
