Vice President Kashim Shettima has arrived in New York, United States, for the 81st United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). He will lead Nigeria’s delegation on behalf of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. The visit comes as world leaders gather to discuss major global issues.
Shettima Highlights Nigeria’s Global Agenda
Shettima’s UNGA 81 participation will focus on Nigeria’s national interests and stronger multilateral cooperation. He will also support President Tinubu’s push for reforms within global institutions. Nigeria wants these institutions to better reflect today’s economic and population realities.
The Vice President said Nigeria would push for a fairer global system. He also stressed the need for developing countries to have a stronger voice.
“Our message in New York is clear: Nigeria believes in multilateralism, but the institutions that govern our world must become more representative, equitable and responsive to the realities of today,” Shettima said.
Nigeria Seeks Stronger Voice for Developing Nations
According to Shettima, Nigeria will engage its international partners based on the country’s national interest. At the same time, the country will push for better opportunities for developing nations.
“We will engage our partners firmly from the standpoint of Nigeria’s national interest,” he said.
He added that Nigeria would support Tinubu’s call for a global system that gives developing countries a stronger voice.
Meanwhile, UNGA 81 will bring together world leaders and senior officials from different countries. Their discussions will cover peace, development, economic prosperity and international cooperation.
Nigeria’s delegation is expected to use the gathering to advance the country’s interests on the global stage.
