Former Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai says his ongoing legal troubles have changed how he views some relationships. The former minister said some friends and associates have remained silent during his difficult period. According to him, their silence has made him rethink certain relationships. He shared his thoughts in a statement posted on X.
El-Rufai is facing allegations involving money laundering and the conversion of public property. He has been in the custody of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) since February 19. This followed his release by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). The former governor has continued to deny wrongdoing through his public statements.
Meanwhile, El-Rufai said some people he previously supported have not shown similar support. He noted that some colleagues, friends and family members have stayed quiet.
“Some have expressed concern at the apparent silence, in my present circumstances, of some of my colleagues, friends and family members whom I have publicly stood by,” he said.
He added that the experience had taught him important lessons about life.
However, El-Rufai said he holds no grudge against anyone. He explained that the experience may influence how he handles certain relationships going forward.
“What I learn in difficult times like the past few months may lead me, quietly and without regret, to reconsider the nature of certain relationships,” he said.
El-Rufai stressed that his decision would not amount to condemnation. Instead, he said it would help him see people and life more clearly.
