Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo says Nigerians are paying less for petrol than motorists in the United Kingdom. He said petrol costs over N3,000 per litre in the UK after currency conversion.
Okpebholo made the comment on Thursday, September 24, 2026. He spoke at the “Operation Rescue Benin-Asaba Road” event in Edo State. The governor said he recently travelled to London and bought petrol there.
“Let me tell you, after conversion, it’s about N3,000-something for one litre of fuel,” Okpebholo said.
He compared the price with petrol selling for around N1,400 per litre in Nigeria. According to him, the difference shows that Nigerians currently pay less for petrol.
“We are doing very well here. The President is stabilising the economy. He’s an economist,” the governor added.
His comments come as Nigerians continue to deal with high fuel prices and rising living costs.
Meanwhile, the government continues to defend President Bola Tinubu’s economic reforms. The reforms followed the removal of the petrol subsidy and subsequent pump price increases. Okpebholo admitted that the changes were difficult but said they would eventually deliver results.
“I want to let you know, very soon Nigeria will be on the cruising level. Nigeria will be on a cruising level,” he said.
The governor’s remarks have renewed attention on petrol prices in Nigeria and the cost of living.
