African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore has joined a Free Palestine protest in New York. He joined demonstrators calling for an end to Israel’s war in Gaza.
Sowore shared news of his participation on Friday through his official X account. The protest took place on Thursday, September 24, as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu visited New York for the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).
Sowore said he attended the protest to stand with Palestinians and demand justice. He also called for respect for human rights.
“I condemn the genocide being committed by the state of Israel in Gaza,” he wrote.
He added,
“I joined to make it clear that Nigerians stand for justice and human rights for Palestinians.”
His comments came as protesters gathered around the UN headquarters. Meanwhile, several demonstrations took place across New York during Netanyahu’s UN visit.
Protesters blocked roads and marched near the UN headquarters. They demanded accountability over Israel’s military campaign in Gaza. Some groups also called for an end to US military support for Israel. Police arrested at least 30 protesters at one demonstration, according to Reuters.
Later reports put the number of arrests across the city at more than 100. Actors Susan Sarandon and Hannah Einbinder were among those detained. The protests continued as Netanyahu defended Israel’s actions during his UN speech. At the same time, dozens of delegates walked out of the General Assembly hall.
