Tension erupted in Benue State on Tuesday morning as suspected thugs attack Obi’s convoy, blocking his entourage from gaining access into parts of the state capital.
The incident occurred shortly after the 2027 presidential hopeful, Peter Obi, arrived in Makurdi. Furthermore, he was traveling with his campaign team for scheduled engagements.
Obi’s media aide and official photographer, Esther Umoh, disclosed the attack in a post on her X handle, releasing video footage showing the blocked route and individuals obstructing movement.
Blockade near Air Force Base
According to Umoh, the armed group intercepted the entourage along Boko Road. Specifically, the incident occurred near the Nigerian Air Force Base in Makurdi.
“We have just arrived in Benue State, where alleged sponsored thugs have blocked Boko Road by the Air Force Base, attempting to prevent Peter Obi from gaining access into the state,” Umoh stated.
Viral video footage showed several men holding sticks and blocking the road, creating an operational gridlock that forced the convoy to a complete halt.
As of the time of filing this report, no official statement has confirmed physical injuries or vehicle damage resulting from the encounter.
Pattern of political friction
Indeed, this latest confrontation reflects recurring political friction surrounding Obi’s activities in the state.
Earlier, a previous humanitarian visit by Obi faced significant administrative hurdles. Consequently, state authorities restricted unannounced high-profile visits to Internally Displaced Persons camps.
Nevertheless, Obi expressed concern over the restrictions at the time. He insisted that his visits aimed to offer humanitarian support and engage citizens directly.
Currently, neither the Benue State Government nor the State Police Command has issued a statement. Therefore, official confirmation regarding Tuesday’s blockade remains pending.
