Andrew and Tristan Tate have asked a Florida court to release them from custody while they challenge extradition to the UK. The brothers face charges including rape and human trafficking.
They both appeared in court in Miami on Thursday wearing tan jail uniforms and shackles. Both denied committing the alleged crimes and criticised the conditions of their detention in the United States.
US Magistrate Judge Lauren Louis is expected to issue a written ruling at a later date. The ruling would decide whether the dual British-American citizens should be granted bail.
Government Says Tates are Flight Risks
US government lawyers argued against their release, describing the brothers as potential flight risks. Prosecutors pointed to their financial resources and alleged claims about having multiple passports. Also arguing that they have the means and connections to evade extradition if released.
The defence rejected that argument, saying the brothers’ high public profiles would make it extremely difficult for them to flee without being detected.
Their lawyers also told the court that the brothers had previously complied with the terms of their release while dealing with the UK allegations and a separate case in Romania.
Brothers Deny Allegations
Andrew Tate, 39, took the stand and said he had “never committed the crimes I’m accused of”.
His younger brother, Tristan Tate, 38, also denied the allegations and described his detention conditions as uncomfortable.
According to CBS News, the BBC’s US partner, Tristan said his cell was small and hot, with limited access to sunlight and exercise.
“It’s beginning to grate on me because I can’t partake in helping with my defence,” he told the court.
He also claimed he had lost 14lb (6.3kg) while in custody, describing his detention as “death by scurvy”.
Andrew Tate said he had been forced to return to boxing against younger and heavier opponents to support himself financially. He also acknowledged making controversial statements online.
“I’ve said some stupid things, but sometimes you have to shake the internet to get noticed,” he said, according to CBS News.
UK Seeks Extradition
The brothers were arrested in Miami on 19 July after the UK’s Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) announced dozens of additional charges against them. British authorities have until 16 September to submit a full extradition request to US authorities.
The UK has brought a total of 59 criminal charges against the brothers, including rape, and offences relating to sex trafficking. As well as charges involving indecent images of a child.
UK prosecutors said the combined allegations involve seven accusers. The British authorities previously filed 21 charges against the brothers last year before adding 38 further counts. However, the brothers deny the allegations.
