A US judge has ruled that the Trump administration unlawfully retaliated against AI company Anthropic.
US District Judge Rita Lin called the Pentagon’s action “illegal and baseless.” She said national security cannot justify punishing government critics.
The case began after Anthropic refused to allow its AI models for some military uses. These included domestic surveillance and autonomous weapons.
The company said its technology was not reliable enough for weapons systems. It also argued that domestic surveillance could violate people’s rights.
Pentagon Targeted Anthropic After Dispute
The Pentagon later labelled Anthropic a “supply chain risk” in February. Such designations are usually linked to companies from countries seen as security threats.
Anthropic became the first publicly known US company to receive the designation. The company then sued the government, calling the move “unprecedented and unlawful.”
Judge Lin found that the Defense Department also pressured military contractors to boycott Anthropic. She ruled that this action exceeded the department’s legal authority.
More importantly, she warned against using national security as a reason to silence critics.
“National security is not a blank check to punish and retaliate against government critics,” Lin said.
Anthropic Wins Major Legal Battle
The ruling gives Anthropic a major victory in its fight with the Trump administration.The judge had earlier accused the government of trying to “cripple” the company. She also said the actions could “chill public debate” about military AI.
“This appears to be classic First Amendment retaliation,” Lin added.
Anthropic welcomed the decision. The company said it still wants to work with the US government on national security.
What the Anthropic Case Means for AI
The dispute highlights a growing battle over how AI should be used by governments and militaries.
The White House previously called Anthropic “a radical left, woke company.” It accused the firm of trying to control military activity.
The Pentagon also argued that private companies should not restrict military operations. However, Anthropic’s case raises a bigger question. Can an AI company reject certain military uses without facing government punishment?
For now, Judge Lin’s ruling says the government cannot use national security claims as a free pass for retaliation.
