President Bola Tinubu has congratulated Governor Ademola Adeleke on his re-election in the Osun State governorship election, saying the result reflects the choice of the people.
Tinubu said Adeleke’s victory also showed that democracy remains strong in Nigeria. The President spoke in a statement issued on Sunday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga. According to the statement, Tinubu had earlier called Adeleke to congratulate him on his victory in the August 15 election.
Tinubu urges Adeleke to unite Osun
The President said Adeleke’s victory confirmed the confidence voters had in him. He also urged the governor to unite the state and focus on its development during his second term.
Tinubu said, “I called Governor Ademola Adeleke earlier today to congratulate him on his election victory in Osun State. His victory once again confirmed the confidence the people of Osun State have in him.”
He added that Adeleke should work with residents regardless of their political affiliations.
“Now that he has won, Governor Adeleke must unite the people of Osun State and rally them for growth, stability, and social and economic progress, regardless of the political choices they made at the election.”
Tinubu also commended the other candidates for their participation in the election. He said their involvement strengthened Nigeria’s democratic process. According to him, “The outcome of the election reflects the will of the people and is a fitting assurance that democracy will continue to flourish in our land.”
The President further praised the Independent National Electoral Commission and security agencies for what he described as a peaceful and transparent election.
Adeleke wins second term
The State Returning Officer, Prof. Joshua Ogunwole, declared Adeleke the winner at about 7:24am on Sunday. Adeleke, who contested on the platform of the Accord Party, polled 511,067 votes to defeat his closest challenger, Bola Oyebamiji of the All Progressives Congress, who scored 444,815 votes.
The governor won 19 of Osun’s 30 local government areas, while Oyebamiji secured 11. The African Democratic Congress candidate, Najeem Salaam, finished third with 17,180 votes. The result gives Adeleke another four years in office after he first won the governorship in 2022 on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party.
He later moved to the Accord Party ahead of the 2026 election. Earlier on Sunday, Adeleke thanked Tinubu for his congratulatory call and again endorsed the President for the 2027 presidential election. He also described Tinubu as a son of Osun State.
